so, first: what it says on the tin! we’re tabling at the queer zest zine fest, and would really love to see folks there! it’s an all-virtual and discord-based zinefest focused on queer zinesters with a lot of artists/zinesters we really love.
second: oh shit oh fuck, the egg carton manifesto has a TWO PAGE LONG TYPO. this is humiliating. i’m working on fixing it, but yeah, i accidentally duplicated one of the pages and now i have to rewrite it and get a fixed PDF. all printed copies currently have the typo, as well as the virtually sold ones. i cannot believe we missed it for this long and i am going to die of shame.
well, it happens. but oh my g-d.

When I found out that Swept Away—a musical I loved so much when I saw it at Arena Stage that I was almost physically ill—was opening on Broadway on my birthday (Oct 29), I immediately bought tickets. Never mind that I live in DC, that it was in the middle of the school week, or that I had no real plan for transportation, I was going to see the motherfucking show.
Well, yesterday was my birthday, and last night I saw it! It was everything I’d hoped and more, and I was planning to make this post a review but honestly I’m still too excited to make a coherent one with good points so just trust me that everything was good even if I can’t articulate why.
( Ramble in place of review (CW: The show is about a shipwreck and includes many heavy themes. Also I’m gonna spoil the shit out of it) )
The show is beautiful in every way it can be. The set is stunning, the lighting beautiful, the sound design amazing, and the story heartbreaking and devastatingly loving. If you have any way to see it on Broadway, I couldn’t recommend it enough.
( Stagedooring & pictures! )
I'm so fucking happy, and so lucky, and oh my G-d people see Swept Away if you possibly can!

for the past week, i’ve been lamenting the fact that i’d have to return my copy of the selected prose of fernando pessoa—with all the dozens of sticky tabs i’ve been putting in—to the library next time i’m there. and between my pessoa, TW’s jewish reading, and the trauma history i’m working on, we were running out of sticky tabs.
today i called my mom when i was driving home to ask if we needed groceries, and she said we had something waiting outside our room.
and lo and behold:

a paperback of the selected prose of fernando pessoa and a pack of dozens of colors of sticky tabs! me and TW are probably gonna split them, since we have enough now for each of us to take our favorite color selections.

Yesterday, right after Rosh Hashanah ended (as in we left the house the exact minute of sunset), me and TW went with our parents to see the Taffety Punk Riot Grrrls' production of MacBeth in DC, and it was excellent!
The show's cast was all-female, which was extremely interesting in combination with how MacBeth handles gender and especially masculinity; aside from the plays that are basically only about gender fuckery (like Twelfth Night or the significantly worse As You like It), I think MacBeth is probably the most intense and interesting Shakespeare gets about sex and gender. From Lady MacBeth's prayer to be unsexed, to her frequent challenging of MacBeth's masculinity in the light of his terror and guilt, to MacDuff saying that before he can take vengeance for his family as a man, he must feel his grief as a man--there's a lot to work with, and the Riot Grrrls do a lot with it!
( Want to read a full review? I think you do! CW for the plot of MacBeth, I don't know what to tell you )

shana tovah!
Oct. 2nd, 2024 11:39 pmhappy new year, folks! we’re observing the prohibition against writing and work, which is causing TW quite a deal of grief. (fun fact: TW is short for the writer!) on the plus side we’ll probably have plenty to write about, because creativity strikes most when you’re not allowed to exercise it. shalom!

not the usual thing, but could someone explain to me how you find/form social circles on dreamwidth? do communities work? HOW do they work? i'm a zoomer who's too used to the tagging & algorithm economy and i'm kind of losing my mind.
i don't even need good advice, i'm just going in circles without feedback /lh

ok, i haven't read any of his books yet and any more details will be coming after that, but today my mom told me about one of her favorite authors almost certainly being plural and i am losing my mind
his name is fernando pessoa, and he invented the term heteronym, if anyone here is familiar with it. the blurb on the book of disquiet--the one i'm getting started reading--begins, "Fernando Pessoa was many authors in one. He attributed his prolific writings to a wide range of alternate selves, each of which had a distinct biography, ideology, and horoscope." his first heteronym originated when he was six years old, and he had them all his life, including communicating with himself through them. the heteronyms were also intentionally created, but they weren't always intentionally accessed.
authors having plural experiences in their writing is nothing new, but what's most interesting to me about pessoa's is how they are all explicitly authors (rather than characters talking back), and explicitly recognized by scholarship without anyone seeming to notice how textbook multiple this all is--probably because the intentionality throws them off, and i imagine the venn diagram of portuguese literary scholars and MPD fanatics are two barely touching circles. (and honestly the point where they touch is probably exclusively my portuguese-speaking art scholar mom telling her plural nerd child& about this author.)

We've been working on a spreadsheet of local communities/groups/etc. for plurals, dissociatives, and similar! So far the list only includes three groups, but we intend to keep adding to it. (Obligatory reminder to read the disclaimers though--we can't guarantee anything about any of the groups listed, aside from DMV Plurals, which we run.)
You can view it here!

Dissociation is a bitch / Untitled Poem
Aug. 29th, 2024 01:06 amIn honor of dissociation kicking my ass and my efforts at prolonged exposure trauma therapy, here is a poem/maybe future lyrics about dissociation--specifically, the moody sort of dissociation where you can't ground and are only able to feel the frustration/irritation around that.

A Return to Writing (& Posting)
Aug. 22nd, 2024 11:04 pmWe like to write. It’s important to us. So important, actually, that one of our most consistent and major headmates is literally called ‘the writer.’
We’ve written our whole life; written fanfiction, written poetry (until that was abrupty put to a traumatic end), written essays and infographics and scripts.
Much of our life and our most important moments were lived through text.
We lost writing to trauma and disability—it slowed to a trickle, nothing coming out right, or the inspiration being totally gone.
But we kept turning to it, trying without really getting why.
So, a return to writing. We’ll see if we actually put anything out. We haven’t stopped writing, but we’ve written less and avoided sharing what we made outside of the writing we could sell.
One of our worst habits is abandoning platforms. We’re not sure why we do it, but we’re working on it.
So let’s see if Dreamwidth survives our whims!

Edit (Jan 5 2025): This post is very old, and while we stand by our criticisms, we do want to note that this post is not comprehensive (there are more problems—one notable one being that pronouns.page has repeatedly had language updates that ignore the criticisms and needs of fluent/native speakers) and also that the alternatives below are no longer our favorites. We primarily recommend pronouns.cc now. Now, onto the original post.
So, fun fact about this entry.
Originally it was about ten pages long, with hours of writing that went into it.
And then my computer crashed and deleted it.
I remember my points, though, so here we go.

TL;DR: the coder & co-owner of pronouns.page (who also runs all Avris projects, such as the gender & sexuality spectrum tool, the attraction layer cake, and emoji pride flags) is an extremely islamaphobic antitheist (with antisemitism and general eurocentrism thrown in) cosplaying as a leftie who, intentionally or not, repeatedly echoes far- and alt-right talking points and ideologies and should definitely not be given the ridiculous level of power and authority they currently hold in the queer community through the project. (This is also your content warning for the subject of this post.)
